Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has shown promise in both the prevention and support of stroke recovery through multiple mechanisms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six deaths from cardiovascular disease in 2020 was attributed to stroke. Each year, approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a stroke, with around 610,000 being first-time occurrences. Stroke remains a leading cause of serious long-term disability in adults and significantly impacts mobility in more than half of survivors aged 65 and older.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has shown promise in both the prevention and support of stroke recovery through multiple mechanisms. It may help precondition the brain by stimulating angiogenesis—encouraging the formation of new blood vessels—and enhancing cerebral circulation. This improved vascular network may reduce the risk of stroke and support neurological resilience.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has also been shown to support recovery in post-stroke patients. By delivering elevated levels of oxygen to areas of the brain with compromised blood flow—known as the penumbra—HBOT may help restore tissue function and promote healing. Notably, research indicates that these benefits can be observed even years after the initial stroke event.
